4 things many people do in the morning

Morning Habits to Avoid That May Lead to Stroke

Stroke is a condition that can affect anyone, not just the elderly. The alarming reality is that many younger individuals are also at risk. Understanding the dangers of stroke and the importance of timely detection and treatment cannot be overstated. Common morning habits—often seen as harmless—may increase your risk. Here, we discuss various habits highlighted by General Practitioner Nguyen Xuan Quang from the Military Medical Academy that you should reconsider.

1. Jumping Out of Bed Immediately

Many people have a tendency to leap out of bed right after waking. This sudden movement can pose a serious risk, as it activates your sympathetic nervous system, leading to a spike in heart rate and blood pressure. This sharp change could potentially result in small blood vessel ruptures in the brain, increasing the potential for stroke.

Recommendation: Take a moment to lie still for 1-2 minutes after waking. Gently massage your face, eyes, head, and neck before getting up, allowing your body to adjust gradually.

2. Drinking Salt Water Upon Awakening

Some believe that starting the day with a glass of salt water offers various health benefits. However, excess salt can result in elevated blood pressure, risk of kidney damage, and increased chance of stroke. Furthermore, salt water on an empty stomach can irritate the stomach lining and lead to ulcers.

Recommendation: Avoid the practice of drinking salt water first thing in the morning. Instead, choose plain water in moderation.

3. Exercising Too Soon

Exercise is undeniably beneficial, but working out before sunrise can have adverse effects. The colder temperatures during dawn may lead to vasoconstriction, which can elevate the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular ailments.

Recommendation: Schedule your workouts for after sunrise when temperatures stabilize. This is particularly crucial for those with pre-existing health issues.

4. Overhydrating as Soon as You Wake

While it’s important to stay hydrated, guzzling down large quantities of water as soon as you wake, especially in colder months, can place a strain on your heart. This could result in symptoms like shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat, heightening the risk of stroke in those with cardiovascular diseases.

Recommendation: Limit your intake to 200-300 ml of water, consuming it in small sips shortly after waking.

Being aware of these morning habits can significantly reduce your stroke risk and enhance your overall wellness. Small changes can lead to substantial health benefits!
