In a profoundly sorrowful incident, 14-year-old Knox MacEwen tragically collapsed during a 5K run in Florida on November 4, 2023, as reported by NBC 6 South Florida.
Knox was an enthusiastic participant in the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program at Western High School in Davie, Florida, where he suffered a cardiac arrest while engaged in this event. He was promptly transported to Memorial Hospital Miramar but, unfortunately, was pronounced dead upon arrival, according to NBC Miami.
The principal of Western High School, Jimmy Arrojo, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “I am saddened to share tragic news impacting our Wildcat community. One of our JROTC students passed away this morning after being transported to the hospital.” He encouraged the community to uplift Knox’s family with thoughts and prayers and mentioned that grief counselors would be available to support students and staff during this challenging time.
The JROTC program, a hallmark initiative sponsored by the U.S. Armed Forces, aims to cultivate self-discipline, leadership capabilities, and confidence among students. Knox’s participation in the program showcased his dedication to growth and community service.
As a valued member of Crossway Church in Cooper City, Knox was cherished by many. Pastor Jon Elswick conveyed the significant effect of Knox’s demise, stating, “When you have a tragedy like this, and someone as loved as Knox, there are ripple effects all the way through our church community.” He reminisced, saying, “Knox’s dad told me a couple of days ago that Knox was the best of us, and I love that phrase because if you knew Knox, that’s who he was—a loving, caring, and funny teenager.”
Our heartfelt condolences extend to Knox’s family, friends, and the entire community as they navigate this unimaginable heartache. May he rest in peace and be celebrated for the warmth and joy he brought to the lives of those around him.
